Mamuju, Sulawesi Sandeq Festival

  • 11:17 AM, 2 Apr, 2020

The Sandeq Festival is one of the traditional sports Mamuju and environs. It takes three people to make a sandeq, a craft that has been handed down through generations through families. They not only race around local waters but have longer races that take them the 460km to Makassar.

On race day 21 eight crew member sailing boats battle it out on a 10km triangular circuit on the waters off Mamuju. The sea is shallow so the sandeq were tethered some distance from shore by long ropes.  Beautiful boats created by skillful craftsmen to be sailed over waters with great imagination. This day the winds were light, so the start was slow.
