Where You Should Take Your First Solo Trip - According To 2,500 Women

(November 27, 2025) Spoiler: 16% of women say to stay home for your first solo female adventure, the rest point to Europe and a handful of standout countries.

If you’ve ever wondered where women think you should take your very first solo trip, the world’s leading community of solo female travelers has the answer.

After surveying more than 2,500 women worldwide annually for five years, Solo Female Travelers Tours confirms the top destination for a first solo trip isn’t international, the consensus is to stay in your own country.

Sixteen percent of women recommend starting in your own country. “Respondents argue that a lot of the stress and challenges that a first solo trip can be are eliminated or reduced when you speak the language, know the culture and are not far from home”, says Co-Founder of Solo Female Travelers Tours and Survey Lead, Mar Pages (pictured below).

Travelers who are ready to go abroad should consider Europe, which earned a commanding 54% of all votes.

When it comes to specific countries, five stood out again and again as the safest, easiest, and most rewarding for first-timers.

The UK, Italy, Thailand, Spain and Japan are top destinations for first solo trip

These destinations topped the list for women who wanted freedom and cultural excitement without the fear of safety concerns, language barriers, loneliness or difficult to navigate infrastructure.

“These aren’t random guesses,” said Meg Jerrard, Co-Founder of Solo Female Travelers Tours. “Women are choosing destinations where they feel safe, confident, and excited - without feeling overwhelmed. Countries that are famously tourist-friendly such as Italy, Spain or Thailand are particularly appealing.”

Why these places? The reasons are unsurprisingly consistent year after year.

Women want cultural excitement without chaos. They want walkable cities, reliable public transport, and destinations with a strong reputation for safety and friendliness, somewhere where they will feel welcomed.

“Your first solo trip should set you up for success, not stress, and make you feel a sense of achievement, not struggle” said Pages.
