(Maldives May 2026)  Jawakara Islands Maldives, in an exclusive partnership with the Olive Ridley Project, has  officially opened its Sea Turtle Health Institute, a flagship facility that marks a historic milestone in sea turtle conservation as the Indian Ocean’s first dedicated sea turtle hospital with a specialised intensive care unit.

Guided by the One Health model - which recognises the interconnectedness of animal, human, and ecosystem health - the Sea Turtle Health Institute is designed to be a global leader in clinical innovation. While approximately 90% of sea turtle emergency cases in the Maldives stem from ghost net entanglements and buoyancy syndrome, the Institute provides the advanced medical infrastructure necessary to treat these complex conditions. The facility is currently caring for six patients, and key features include:

● Advanced Therapeutics: The Institute is one of only two facilities globally providing clinical regenerative medical therapies, such as stem cell and platelet-rich plasma treatments. The facility utilises molecular-based precision medicine, offering capabilities unmatched in the Maldives, including digital X-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, and Class IV laser therapy. 

● Specialised Clinical Spaces: A fully equipped surgical suite, radiography suite for digital X-rays, and a comprehensive diagnostic laboratory. 

● Cutting-Edge Monitoring: Seven round hospital tanks - expandable to 12 - feature unique viewing ports and 24/7 camera monitoring for non-invasive observation. 

Beyond clinical care, the Sea Turtle Health Institute will also serve as a Sea Turtle University. In collaboration with the Maldives National University, it will host a Sea Turtle Veterinary Assistant Diploma Programme, offering both Maldivian and international students a globally recognized credential.

Guests of Jawakara can also engage with conservation through behind-the-scenes tours and special activities designed for younger explorers. This opening complements Jawakara’s broader commitment to the environment, including a Marine Science Centre featuring five state-of-the-art laboratories. This centre focuses on pioneering coral spawning techniques to produce millions of larvae for large-scale reef restoration.
