(Singapore, August 16, 2024) REDSEA Gallery is pleased to announce an upcoming solo exhibition ‘Wanderlust’ by South Korean artist Jieun Park. Featuring a curated selection of her new, midnight cityscapes the exhibition will open on 13 September. Park's distinctive style blends traditional painting techniques with a modern twist and REDSEA is delighted to be showcasing her 5th solo exhibition with the gallery that will take the viewer on a journey across the globe.

Jieun Park describes starting a new artwork as the most important yet the most difficult part of her process, she begins with an abstract brush movement that is ‘led by emotion’. These stylistic marks in Chinese Ink are similar to calligraphy, however unlike traditional calligraphy they are instinctively spread, splattered and dropped on the surface of the paper.

Once the ink is dry Park uses acrylic paint to create highly detailed depictions of different cities she has visited, this to her is a therapeutic and meditative process. Park uses an array of colours to convey specific moments and emotions she felt during her travels, be it happiness, loneliness or eagerness. The artist works on authentic Korean paper, this is a nod to her cultural heritage and is an important element in her work, the paper adds a beautiful texture and subtlety to the unique pieces.

Whilst capturing the excitement and magic of various cities like Hong Kong, Singapore, Florence, Tokyo, London and New York, the work also reveals a more subdued, contemplative narrative. Through her paintings, Park hints at the paradox of urban life; simultaneously being surrounded by thousands of people, yet also at times feeling alone. "I've always been fascinated by the unique atmosphere of cities at night," says Jieun Park. "The way light transforms ordinary buildings into shimmering structures and casts intricate patterns of shadows is truly magical. Through my work, I aim to capture that magic and share it with others, inviting them to see the beauty in the urban landscapes that often go unnoticed."

Her work captures the interplay of light and shadow, revealing the vibrant energy and subtle tranquillity that coexist in urban environments. Each piece is a testament to her keen eye for detail and her ability to infuse a sense of wonder and storytelling into familiar city scenes. For the artist, drawing and design have been a passion since she was a little girl growing up in South Korea. She pursued her love of painting by taking a degree in Fine Arts and Design Advertising at Konkuk University in Seoul, majoring in Oriental painting. Her work has since been displayed in various art fairs and exhibitions in South Korea, Hong Kong, France, and Italy and Singapore.

‘Wanderlust’ will be on view at REDSEA Gallery from 13 September 2024
