Vietnam Airlines Prohibits Use of Lithium Power Banks Onboard to Strengthen Flight Safety

(Hanoi, September 10, 2025) Vietnam Airlines has implemented a new set of aviation safety measures aimed at reducing the risks associated with lithium power banks onboard aircraft. This initiative reinforces the airline’s continued commitment to upholding the highest standards of passenger and flight safety.
According to the updated policy, the use of lithium power banks is now strictly prohibited during flights across the entire Vietnam Airlines Group network, including Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines and Vasco. Passengers are still permitted to carry lithium power banks in their hand luggage; however, they must be declared at the check-in counter and kept in a clearly visible and easily accessible spot throughout the flight.
To ensure a prompt and effective response in the event of a lithium battery-related incident, Vietnam Airlines has equipped its aircraft with specialized safety tools. These include heat-resistant gloves and fire and smoke containment bags, all sourced from reliable manufacturers and certified by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam. Furthermore, all cabin crew have undergone intensive training programs to ensure they are fully prepared to handle any onboard emergencies.
In parallel with these onboard enhancements, Vietnam Airlines has worked closely with the Immigration Department under the Ministry of Public Security to reinforce screening procedures at major international airports, including Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat. These efforts aim to identify potential risks before passengers board the aircraft.
Lithium batteries, commonly used in portable electronic devices and power banks, are widely recognized as a fire hazard when damaged or overheated. International aviation safety regulations already prohibit these items from being placed in checked baggage. In recent months, several global airlines have reported incidents involving smoke or fire caused by lithium batteries in cabin luggage, some of which led to emergency landings.
Concerns have also surfaced in the technology industry. On September 1, 2025, a major tech corporation issued a worldwide recall of a 20,000 mAh power bank model due to overheating risks that could lead to fire or explosion.
In response to the growing need for tighter safety protocols, numerous major airlines including China Airlines, Korean Air, Hong Kong Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Emirates have prohibited the use of lithium power banks onboard over the past year.
Vietnam Airlines will continue to monitor global safety developments and remain aligned with international best practices. The airline is committed to regularly updating its operational procedures in strict accordance with guidelines set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and relevant domestic and international aviation authorities.
