The Singapore Story - Told Through the Artistry of Porcelain

(Singapore, July 8, 2025) I wasn’t sure why I had decided to attend this SG60 event when there are so many events commemorating Singapore’s 60 years as a sovereign nation. When I walked into Luzerne’s Bendemeer Road showroom, I immediately realized why I was drawn here. The colours, the texture, the artistry, the displays, created a sensory experience that I absorbed in one glance at the room. The cabinets, the lighting, the craftsmanship. The history, the present and the future, an intricate web entwined with the soul of Singapore. Born in Singapore, grew, nurtured and matured in Singapore. Luzerne now connects with the world.

Luzerne invited special guests and media to the launch of Luzerne’s SG60 Diamond Collection. CEO of Luzerne Singapore, Elaine Lek, told the crowded room that 60 pieces of 50cm commemorative plates will be donated to charity. The third-generation owner stated that mental health and being a social enterprise “is deeply personal for me.” Luzerne will donate all 60 of the plates to charity, with the objective of raising S$600,000 for charitable causes with a focus on mental health

“As co-founder of the PleaseStay. Movement,” Ms Lek continued, “speaking up on youth mental health and suicide prevention has never been a choice – it is a responsibility I carry. My hope is that through awareness, compassion and open dialogue, we can break the stigma and better support those who are silently struggling to seek help with no prejudice.”

After her speech, Ms Lek gave tours of the showroom that included a secret room that contains the important treasures the company – some of which might surprise you.

Ms Denise Phua Lay Peng, Member of Parliament and Mayor of Central Singapore District and the Chairman of Community Chest Singapore, Mr Chew Sutat, spoke of the importance of Luzerne to Singapore. ‘The special tableware tells the story of Singapore through the artistry of porcelain.’ They also praised the ‘truly exceptional’ company and Ms Lek for their role in giving back to the community.

Luzerne started in 1947 as Hiap Huat, at a modest shop along Beach Road. From the brand’s humble beginnings, it grew into a trading company importing housewares from China, Japan and Czechoslovakia. Luzerne’s products are crafted by more than 800 skilled artisans at its fully owned factory in Dehua, China. Utilising a fully automated production facility, the factory produces up to 28 million pieces of ceramic and stone tableware annually.

The collection was proudly conceptualised and painted by Associate Professor Ng Woon Lam, a Singaporean artist, international award-winning watercolourist and Dolphin Fellowship awardee of the American Watercolour Society. Professor Ng’s painting style leans towards Chinese calligraphy strokes. His portrayal of Singapore’s milestones is captivating and endearing, accurately depicting the heart of its people.

“The resilience of a nation stems from the fortitude of its people,” stated Ms Lek. “As Singapore continues to progress, rapid change is inevitable. With Luzerne’s humble contribution to SG60, I hope to show support for those navigating societal pressures or identity challenges amid these shifts.”

To date, more than 20 social service agencies have expressed interest in receiving the SG60 Diamond Plates for their own fundraising efforts, which Luzerne will distribute among these charities. Separately, Luzerne will launch a fundraising initiative for 10 of the plates in collaboration with Community Chest Singapore (ComChest), with all proceeds going to the President’s Challenge, The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (STSPMF), Samaritans of Singapore and Limitless Singapore.

Fundraising for the plates under ComChest will be conducted online at www.luzerne.com/sg60, with minimum donations starting at S$2,688 per plate. At the close of the fundraising period, the top 10 donors will each be presented with a serialised plate, encased in a premium gift box with a custom-made plate stand.

As testament to its commitment to create a sustainable, culturally aware global brand, Luzerne has taken a revolutionary innovative stance by using bone ash-free products for its entire range, unique among its counterparts and making its factory in Dehua the first in the world to be Halal-certified. Committed to quality, craftmanship and design excellence, Luzerne is the trusted tableware partner for leading airlines, hotels, and restaurants in over 66 countries.
