(Kuching, August 1, 2026) Malaysia's first voco hotel has opened in Kuching, introducing the IHG Hotels & Resorts premium brand to the country. The 321-room property forms part of the new Wisma Elica development, which also houses Care Collective, East Malaysia's largest senior wellness centre.

More than simply refurbishing the former Four Points by Sheraton and Century Hotel, the project transforms the site into a multi-purpose destination where hospitality, wellness, lifestyle and community come together. By integrating voco Kuching with Care Collective, the development aims to deliver both economic benefits and positive social outcomes.

Officially opening Wisma Elica, Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari, described the project as a strong vote of confidence in the state's future. He said the redevelopment has successfully breathed new life into the former hotel while representing an important milestone for Sarawak's tourism and hospitality sector. The project also highlights the state's commitment to sustainable investment, urban renewal and international collaboration. The Premier noted that the hotel further strengthens Kuching's appeal as a destination for leisure travel, business events, conferences and meetings.

Contemporary Design and Facilities

Guest rooms combine modern comfort with the latest technology, including complimentary Wi-Fi and smart televisions. Every room features a bathtub, filtered drinking water and design elements that reflect Sarawak's cultural heritage. Hotel facilities include a swimming pool, gymnasium, sauna, ballroom, retail outlet, restaurant, lobby café and bar, together with a stylish speakeasy.

Hospitality design specialists SL+A Hotels created interiors inspired by Sarawak's rich cultural traditions, blending contemporary styling with local influences and authentic guest experiences. The building's exterior has also been reimagined by Neuman Studio and One Design Office, creating a contemporary façade while respecting the property's architectural history.

The opening also coincided with the launch of Sarawak's first Tesla Destination Charging hub, underlining voco Kuching's commitment to sustainability and future-focused hospitality.

Shared Brand Vision

voco is IHG's fastest-growing premium hotel brand, with more than 235 hotels either operating or under development worldwide. The brand is known for combining distinctive design, genuine hospitality and experiences that reflect the character of each destination, while maintaining the high standards expected from IHG.

Representing IHG Hotels & Resorts, Rajit Sukumaran, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, East Asia & Pacific, said the relationship with Elica Equity was built on shared values rather than simply developing another hotel.

"What creates a successful hotel is more than an impressive building or a recognised international brand. It is finding partners with shared values, long-term commitment and a common vision. From our earliest discussions with the owner, Dato Bobby Ting and his team, it was obvious this was far more than another hotel project."

Sukumaran said voco Kuching demonstrates how international hospitality expertise can be successfully combined with local culture to create a destination that is distinctive, authentic and meaningful for both visitors and the local community.

He added that the hotel reflects the dedication and passion of everyone involved in creating a property that makes a lasting contribution to Kuching and Sarawak.

Emerging Borneo

The opening further reinforces Kuching's growing reputation as one of Borneo's leading destinations for tourism, business events and international investment.

Blending contemporary design with thoughtful service and the genuine warmth associated with both the voco brand and the people of Sarawak, the hotel reflects a broader vision that extends well beyond traditional hospitality to support changing community needs.

The premier reaffirmed the government's ambition to build a prosperous, innovative and sustainable economy. While the government provides leadership and essential infrastructure, he said meaningful progress depends on strong partnerships with the private sector.

Since welcoming its first guests in June, voco Kuching has rapidly established itself as a distinctive destination for business travellers, holidaymakers and local residents, and has already hosted several major international events.

Located only a few minutes from Kuching International Airport, the hotel is approximately 15 minutes from the city's historic centre, vibrant Chinatown, colonial-era landmarks and the Sarawak River waterfront. Nearby attractions include Damai Beach, the Sarawak Cultural Village, the popular Weekend Market and the Semenggoh Orang Utan Centre.
