Olympic Rugby 7s champions Fiji national team play Singapore Wheelchair Rugby team

Singapore , 25 April 2018: Reigning Olympic champions Fiji 7s and 7 rugby players from the Singapore Wheelchair Rugby (SWR) team took to the court yesterday night in a friendly match, ahead of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Singapore which kicks off on Saturday. 

Organised by Fiji Airways – the official airline of Fiji Rugby and the HSBC Singapore Rugby 7s – with the support of Sport Singapore , the wheelchair-to-wheelchair friendly match was an opportunity to showcase different forms of athleticism across the rugby game and celebrate the passion for sports that unites both teams. Alasio Naduva and Kirby Soh Zi Hao

Led by team captain Jerry Tuwai, the Fiji 7s team including Jasa Veremalua and Eroni Sau joined the wheelchair rugby team in the only match they are playing outside of the tournament. Ahead of the game, the Fijian players shared some of their moves and tactics, while the SWR team also imparted their skills in wheelchair rugby playing. 

Singapore Wheelchair Rugby Team Captain Richard Kuppusamy said, “Wheelchair Rugby breaks stereotypes and empowers disabled people to create positive influences through the challenge of sport. We are honoured to have the opportunity to build a relationship with the Fiji 7s team, to demonstrate social inclusion through our shared passion for rugby .”Jerry Tuwai and Mesh Kunalolo

The Olympic gold medallist Fiji 7s team are in Singapore for the 2018 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Singapore held from 28-29 April 2018 at the National Stadium.

The SWR team was founded in 2016, and has since participated in regional competitions held in Jakarta and Bali.
