(Singapore, April 23, 2024) Like most people I think of Morton's The Steakhouse as an evening / dinner restaurant. Morton’s is a sophisticated restaurant that specializes not only in steaks, but seafood as well. Now the team is opening the restaurant at Mandarin Oriental on Sundays as Kaelyn Wang, Sales and Marketing Manager, explained.
Sunday Brunch has long been popular in Singapore, but Morton’s Steak and Seafood Sunday Lunch is more specialized than offering a buffet.
Coming in from the bright Singapore noontime heat the subdued yellow lighting gives one the feeling of entering a private enclave. Morton’s General Manager, Seth Blagden, greeted us and encouraged us to have a cocktail while we awaited our table.
Having enjoyed a cocktail tasting at Morton’s back in October I went for a tangy and refreshing Torino Tonic while Farah decided on a gin and tonic – made with a local gin. Considering the time of day we sipped very slowly and the wait staff moved the drinks to our table. The corner table at the rear gave us a view of the entire room.
As we looked over the menu, a steaming Onion Loaf was set on our table. With the butter it was the perfect start for what was to come. Throughout the meal the service was prompt, and the staff were delightful, almost always with a big smile as they served us. Every one of them was a real joy.
While this is not a ‘buffet’ lunch you are not limited in choice. For the starter we had to decide from Morton’s Iceberg Wedge Caesar Salad, Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, Baked French Onion Soup and Lobster Bisque. How to decide? Farah, who makes a very good Caesar Salad herself, went for that while I couldn’t resist the Lobster Bisque.
The Lobster Bisque was full lobster and full bisque flavor setting the stage for what was to come. Having to make one selection for the entrée from the list of the following I read it through and through again, imagining what each would be like: 6oz. Center Cut Filet Mignon, 10oz. Prime New York Strip, 12oz. Center Cut Filet Mignon, 16oz. Center-Cut Prime Ribeye, 16oz. Center-Cut Cajun Prime Ribeye. There could be no wrong choice and I knew I had made the right decision when I bit into the first slice of the 10oz. Prime New York Strip. It was the perfect steak experience. The 6oz. Center Cut Filet Mignon fell to Farah’s knife.
For the seafood entrée I had less angst selecting from options of Jumbo Lump Crab Cake, Lobster Tail and Bacon Wrapped Sea Scallops. How could anyone resist lobster tail dipped in butter? Farah could, as she went for the Crab Cake. Most often I’ve found crab cake to be dry and bland. Morton’s would have none of that. It was moist and with a subtle tang that made it a standout.
Looking at the list of Signature Side Dishes for me there was only one choice. Sour Cream Mashed Potatoes. If I could only eat one dish for the rest of my life it would be mashed potatoes. These mashed potatoes convinced me that would be the right decision. If I just said potatoes then I could also enjoy the Parmesan & Truffle Fries, which arrived in abundance. Jumbo Asparagus was a third option.
For dessert I went with the Crème Brûlée and Farah the Chocolate Lava Cake over the Key Lime Pie. Cheesecake is a seasonal dessert, which is available from now till 12 May. We were presented with a slice of Carrot Cake that Farah loved so much she was reluctant to share. The wedge of Carrot Cake that arrived at our table was so large it could’ve been a landmark.
All manner of beverages is available. As we were mainly having steak, Farah had a glass of Pinot Noir and I, Cabernet Sauvignon. Both excellent choices.
We really had a wonderful time. Give yourself time to enjoy, linger, sip and savour and maybe time for a short nap when you get home.
The Steak and Seafood is available on Sunday Lunch from 12:00pm to 3:00pm.
