The Bodhi Tree (tree of awakening) is located in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India, under which Siddhartha Gautama, who became known as Buddha, is said to have attained enlightenment. According to Buddhist texts, the Buddha meditated without moving from his seat for seven weeks under this tree. Shrines and temples have been made around it and pilgrims from the world over come here to worship. A shrine called Animisalocana cetiya, was erected on the spot where Buddha sat. The tree has died many times and been replaced with a new one, planted in the same place.
As part of the Buddhist Conclave, hosted in part by Incredible India Tourism, I visited the site in August 2018. It is a busy place with people in prayer and worship throughout the complex.
