(16 October 2024) QantasLink will become the first airline to operate the Airbus A220 from Singapore, adding the newest aircraft of the fleet to its Singapore to Darwin route. The upgrade from Embraer E190 to Airbus A220 will add more seats to the route ahead the launch on 30 March 2025.
QantasLink has been operating the A220 since March 2024 but Singapore will be its first destination outside of Australia. The new jet will fly to Darwin five times per week and offer over 70,000 seats between the cities every year.
The A220 is significantly more fuel efficient than previous generation aircraft, with an ultra-modern light and bright cabin design, large windows and overhead lockers, specially designed seats and greater sense of space.
The new route is in addition to the other destinations that the Australian national carrier currently operates from Singapore including Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, as well its daily Airbus A380 service to London.
Cam Wallace, CEO Qantas International stated, “We have been flying the A220 since March and the feedback from customers has been fantastic. We’re really excited to be the first airline to bring this popular aircraft to the much-anticipated Singapore route.
“Our new flight will make it much easier for our customers in Singapore to incorporate Darwin into their Australian itinerary and experience the magic of the Northern Territory.”
Anand Stanley, President Airbus Asia-Pacific added, “We’re thrilled that Qantas is the first airline to operate the latest generation A220 in Southeast Asia. The use of the A220 on the Darwin-Singapore route is a perfect example of what the A220 brings to the market – longer range, greater comfort and lower operating costs, and all this with a significant reduction in carbon emissions.”
Key features of the A220 experience include:
• Space for 137 passengers across two cabins, with 10 Business seats in a 2-2 configuration and 127 seats in Economy in a 2-3 configuration.
• The largest windows of any single aisle aircraft and a cabin with a greater sense of space.
• An integrated personal device holder and USB A and C charging in both Economy and Business;
additional wireless charging pad in Business.
• Around 20 per cent more overhead locker space for all customers.
• Reduction in noise footprint of up to 50 per cent and reduction in carbon emissions of 25 per cent per seat compared with the aircraft its replacing.
