In keeping with their commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, 137 Pillars House Chiang Mai has recently introduced the following environmental programmes:
Composting Organic Waste and Producing Biochar for the Soil
137 Pillars House is working with WarmHeart Environment, a grassroots organization for sustainable farming and the substantial reduction in smoke and harmful particles in the air as a result of crop clearing by burning. It is estimated that it costs the tourist industry 2 billion baht each month during the burning season.
WarmHeart will demonstrate two incinerators and set up a composting area for the hotel so it can (a) responsibly manage its organic waste by burning at high temperature to produce biochar (charcoal) and (b) use kitchen vegetable / fruit and salad waste as part of our composting. Biochar is added to the soil and increases the fertility and PH of the soil, enabling increased agricultural productiviey and protection against some foliar and soil-borne diseases. It reduces pressure on forests and can endure in the soil for thousands of years.
Introducing Non-Toxic Mosquito Control Programme
The hotel is working with Mosquito Lady Consulting to use environmentally responsible measures and products to control and eradicate mosquitos which are found in tropical climates and throughout the region. General Manager Anne Arrowsmith is also inviting other Chiang Mai Hotels to join the program for wider benefits throughout the local community for both guests, visitors and residents of Chiang Mai.
